DQE launches the first Carbon footprint Calculator

DQE, a member of Bpifrance’s Coq Vert community and publisher of customer data quality management solutions, is launching a digital Carbon footprint Calculator to link data quality processing with carbon data.
A customer database with one million e-mail addresses, cleaned up by DQE and its data quality solution, saves nearly 5 tons of CO2e in an e-mail campaign.
DQE, a member of Bpifrance’s Coq Vert community and a software vendor offering customer data quality management solutions, is launching a digital Carbon footprint Calculator to make the connection between data quality processing and carbon data. This is a first in France. This tool is initially offered to DQE’s customers, and it will help companies measure the CO2 emissions they can avoid when they conduct their customer campaigns (marketing, digital, sales, etc.).

Clean data is sober data

In practical terms, the Carbon footprint Calculator expresses the environmental benefits of maintaining the quality of customer databases in terms of avoided emissions (measured in CO2e). “One person can be found several times in the same database, generating unnecessary text messages, e-mails, and paper mailings. DQE is aimed primarily at companies whose databases may include hundreds of thousands to several million customer contacts, and whose data quality translates into kilos or even tons of CO2e not emitted,” explains Stéphane Donders, CEO of DQE.
“We manage extremely large volumes of data, in excess of three billion customer data validation requests every year, found in the CRM databases of companies positioned in the BtoC and BtoB markets. Our Carbon footprint Calculator will enable our customers to quantify the carbon savings, expressed in CO2 equivalent (CO2e), achieved via the processing of their customer databases,” adds Stéphane Donders, CEO of DQE.
DQE drew on a number of existing tools and methodologies to design its digital Carbon footprint Calculator. In particular, it refers to the Empreinte (“footprint”) database provided by ADEME, the official public database of emission factors and inventory data sets needed to carry out carbon accounting for organizations.
DQE also relied on the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method, one of the most advanced tools currently available for the global, multi-criteria evaluation of the environmental impact of a good or service. DQE also had the support of several specialized firms: 17 Impacts, a consulting firm specializing in digital technology and sustainable development, and Alain Gourarié, who has a doctoral degree in computer science (UPMC) and is a graduate of the Collège des Hautes Etudes en Environnement et en Développement Durable (CHEE&DD).
The aim of this eco-calculator is to link high-quality data processing with a reduction in the carbon footprint of a company’s business activity. “Every customer will have a processing report on emissions avoided. This processing report on carbon emissions avoided can be used directly as part of an organization’s CSR policy, and more specifically its carbon footprint evaluation (Bilan Carbone) and action plan,” Stéphane Donders added.

Four DQE modules involved

The Carbon footprint Calculator developed by DQE applies to four separate modules of its “DQE One” Data Quality Management solution:

Emailsending newsletters and e-mailing campaigns,

Address(address cleansing) sending postal mail and parcels,

Phonesending text messages and making voice calls,

Duplicateidentifying duplicate records and providing a unified customer view.

This innovation is part of the overall CSR strategy of DQE, which is a member of Bpifrance’s Coq Vert community and has been awarded the Gold medal by the EcoVadis platform. This gold medal places DQE among the top 5% of the highest-performing companies audited by the world leader in CSR assessments. DQE obtained ISO 27001 certification from AFNOR [French national standardization body] and was given low-carbon certification in June 2023.
